To access dAmn through your browser, you will need to have a browser that supports Javascript, Java, and/or FlashPlayer running either Windows or Mac OSX (FlashPlayer tends to be more stable than Java). Both Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox support these. Upgrading or installing software of this sort is for experienced users only.
If you are a Mac OSX user using Safari as your browser, please see the Safari dAmn fix thread.
FAQ #293: What do I need to use dAmn?
To access dAmn, you will need an active DeviantART account. To find the dAmn hub, navigate to chat.deviantart.com and choose a channel. As a general rule, #devart tends to be the best channel for new users to learn how to use the system.
Official Chatrooms: The chat moderators (denoted by the addition of a @ to the front of their name, for instance @sapphiretiger) can usually be found in #MNAdmin or under situations where it cannot be avoided, in #help or #devart. They will help you with any problems you are having where they can. Please avoid sending them personal notes, however. If you are unable to contact a chat moderator through dAmn, please check to see if the "Clerk" (*MNBot) is in the chatroom. If the Clerk is there, send a ticket to the +helpdesk that includes the chatroom where the trouble is occuring, the approximate time the trouble started (with the timezone!) and the usernames of the deviants who were causing the trouble.
Unofficial Chatrooms: Please contact a Founder or Operator of the chatroom first. Note them and politely explain the situation. If the Founder or Operators do not listen to you, leave them alone and forget about it. If, and only if, you are being severely abused by both the chatroom's users and its Founders and Operators, report the incident to the +helpdesk, including the name of the chatroom where the trouble is occuring, an outline of what occured and the usernames of the deviants who were causing the trouble. Please try to capture screenshots of the trouble to back up your case.
The following is an incomplete listing of dAmn commands, but these are the most useful to new dAmn users. Please see FAQ #292: What are the commands that I can use in dAmn? for a full listing.
There are other ways to connect to dAmn, yes. But, the browser-based method is generally best for most deviants. The other methods are generally targetted at people who have had experience with IRC, or Linux/UNIX applications. Protocol accesspoints such as `doofsmack's Frabjous, and ~moeffju's List of dAmn Clients are available, but for the most part are unsupported and still in their beta phases.
